I’m wondering if I can start an advertising and/or marketing agency. For the last couple of years I’ve developed good relations with several people in radio/newspapers/online/TV, etc. So I’m at this stage in which I would like to get something started along the lines of advertising and marketing. I am more into P.R. work than advertising, but I’m being very broad and general with the question, so advertising pretty much covers the entire scope of what I would like to do.
I’m pretty creative, net-savvy, and the only thing I’m not aware of is how to get started. Or if there is any specific set of “expectations” from an agency.
I’ve been thinking about getting some referrals by helping some of the lonely booth people in the middle of malls and the like. And a few unsuccessful-yet-potential-cash-cow restaurants.
Where do I go from here?

Specifically, isn’t it really the commercialization of out public space for private gain? Or should outdoor advertising be banned or restricted. Now with the digital billboards, I expect to see moving “live” commercials any day now. I’ve been to Vegas and they’ve pretty much sealed off the traffic from pedestrians because of the distraction of moving images.
Is there anything from stopping moving images from coming to Milwaukee? Has anybody else noticed that Milwaukee seem to be 90% digital while Chicago has 2 or 3 digital billboards?
I’m not suggesting that we are “ahead” of them. Maybe we are less bright for letting it happen.
Originally the signs had a 30 second cycle for changing. Now it’s 7 seconds. Heck, I even try to see some of the ads and they are GONE before I even finish reading them. I’m no FAN of Outdoor Advertising, and usually because they are so LAME and focused on branding instead of getting anything accomplished of value.
Let me explain my position on branding.
I know all about Nike and Levi Jeans. They are the TOP brands in my mind for those 2 categories. Yet, I’ve NEVER purchased those brands on purpose. Yes, I’ve worn them, tied them, and when worn out, discarded them. There are OTHER manufacturers that fit me better. I always steer to the ones that fit best or last the longest.
So all that money spent on branding adds no value to my life. Instead of spending another nickle on worthless Branding advertising, they should add a postcard Kiosk to the store display and I could send them FEEDBACK on why I don’t buy their brand.
But getting back to Outdoor Advertising….I read the SENDICKS ads because they are useful and relevant. I was really Ticked-off when the billboards went to a 7 second cycle time and I couldn’t finish reading the ad some of the time. Most of the time it’s not a problem. Either someone is BRIGHT over there, or as most grocery stores learned a long time ago, brevity is golden. Especially true for Outdoor ads.
I have enjoyed the Sendicks shopping experience for 20 years now and if they have a sale…I drive out of my way to stop in. It helps that Sendicks is near to Kopps. Any excuse will do to drive by Kopps and see if a great custard flavor is just sitting there, waiting for me. Yum!

I’m pretty sure you can operate this kind of business out of a rental property but obviously you should verify that if there’s any question. Someone on my block applied for a permit and I’m pretty sure she wasn’t the owner.
I think you should find where you want to live, locate available units and then talk to the landlord.
I’m in Milwaukee on business and have been trying to figure out exactly where the River Walk is located. I have a general address of North Water Street and another one of 1000 N. 3rd Old World St. Basically, I need something I can program into my GPS. Also, is there a parking lot or a garage? Is it nice? Are there good restaurants along there? It’s hard to find info on it.
Hi. I live in Iowa. It’s actually not that bad. Unless you like baseball. With MLB.TV I am locked out of the following markets due to blackout restrictions: both Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Minnesota, Kansas City and sometimes (always?) Cincinnati.
If I get the MLB Extra Innings package will I still not have the local (and I use the term very loosely) teams? Or I am just fated to never see my teams play?
I know in todays economy everyone is cutting back on spending, especially businesses by laying off employee’s. However there are still print and television advertising still being purchased. I know what it takes to start a business, however I would like to know what it takes actually start a grassroots advertising agency? What does it intel? Creating creative ads for clients, being familiar with places and cost to advertise? What would I need to do? Any information would be helpful.
In the Milwaukee WI radio market the most powerful radio station is WTMJ 620. They used to have a token liberal on to satisfy the FCC suggestion of fair broadcasting. They start at 8:30 am -12;00pm w/Conservative Charlie Sykes, after the news at noon they have Conservative Jeff Wagner for two hours. At 8pm they have conservative Jessica McBride for 2 hours. They have absolutely no one with opposing views on this radio station.
This past election they interview or gave free airtime at least 10 times to the Republican candidate for governor. They gave absolutely n o free time to the Democratic candidate. The Democrat won because their are a great many people who listen to true debate on public television, radio and can find true accuracy to make decisions.
