“What is natural search engine optimization?” you might ask. Also referred to as organic search engine optimisation, it refers to the process of achieving and maintaining high ranking placements in the free search engine listings, i.e. the results that are not paid for.

Pay per click marketing is now a billion pound industry that involves completely different skills and techniques to be successful compared to natural search engine optimisation, so if you have a limited budget how do you decide which approach is right for you?

At Commercetuned, we realize that both organic SEO and PPC are two key parts of any online marketing strategy, and should be used in tandem. Both have their pros and cons - review our pay per click advertising page for full details of the advantages of this approach. Ultimately, however, organic SEO will prove more cost effective than PPC advertising, and so would be the first choice for those of you who cannot afford to utilize both methods. The reasons for this are as follows:

  • With pay per click marketing you always pay for each visit you receive, so when your daily or monthly budget runs out, the traffic from search engines to your website stops. Through a natural search campaign you only pay for on-page optimization work and then monthly link building to achieve the best results.
  • Natural optimisation results in a far greater exposure across all search engines than pay per click, (unless you run multiple PPC campaigns, which can prove time consuming to administrate and expensive) as we optimise our clients sites for all search engines to increase the targeted traffic to your website
  • Natural SEO is always content based, and involves detailed analysis of search engine user behaviour. A campaign will inevitably fine tune your website copy to provide the information that people are looking for, whereas pay per click campaigns do not require improvements to the websites, and therefore do not enhance your site for all users.
  • While the risk is minimal, there is the potential for click-through fraud with pay per click traffic, especially with some less established PPC vendors (with less sophisticated tracking tools). With high natural search engine placements your competitors can click on your listings all day long and it won’t cost you a penny
  • Statistics show that people favour websites that rank highly in the natural listings over those in the sponsored listings, as they appreciate that the site is there on it’s own merit and through hard work, rather than payment, although admittedly some users don’t know the difference between free and paid results [Source: De Vos & Jansen, February 2007].
  • Organic results were viewed most often - 98% viewed these results, while only 31% of sponsored results on the right of the page resulted in visits.
  • The split of organic to paid links on a search engine is approximately 4 to 1. [E-consultancy, Online Marketing Benchmarks, 2003]

So why use CommerceTuned for your natural SEO campaign?

We’ve been optimising websites for over 7 years, long before pay per click campaigns were even a “twinkle in Google/Yahoo’s eye“. Search engine algorithms do change over the years and we constantly adapt our approach and our techniques to make sure our clients remain at the top of the listings, but the fundamental core for what makes a good SEO campaign remains the same; correct website focus, optimised code and copy, and a quality link building campaign. Our results speak for themselves.

We’ve done natural search engine optimisation on over 100 websites and can confidently predict we’ve got experience in your sector. We are 100% transparent in all the work we do so you’re never in the dark, and we are fully accountable when it comes to the service we offer, which is an affordable, fully managed optimisation account to best promote your products, services, and brand.

Search engine optimisation is still regarded as some as a “shady industry”, so why not take the guesswork out of it and contact us, we’ll happily talk you through what the campaign would comprise of and all the costs involved.

Some Wordpress upgrades are due to serious problems.  THIS one is not.  Don’t upgrade if you don’t need to.  Some are finding the catagories wiped out and they now need to rebuild the tables by hand:

So the data has been checked.  The search counts shown on the Google External Tool are DEAD ON ACCURATE!  Ed Dale says so.  So get some keyword research done while the getting is good.   Al that way down to 16 searches per month.

That’s a very SWEET substitute for the loss of Overture/Yahoo counts.

First there was the huge build up and promotion of the release. “World Record to be set!” regarding the number of downloads in one day. Woo - hoo. If the point was for somebody to build a list from people who get excited about such things, then good luck.

I think most of the “First adopters” in the crowd ( the people who buy into anything “new”) would have already tried out Firefox 3.5 - Beta Version. Just my opinion.

Then the biggest promoted feature was the autofill stuff that shows up when you enter text into the address box. It was so bulky and annoying that I loaded an add-on just to change it back.

The I noticed that any unusual tabs with media features would crash the browser. Especially considering that Firefox 2 was becoming VERY stable.

Then the straw that broke the camels back….Firefox 3.0 forgot all of my email access passwords. Worse, it couldn’t remember them again long enough for me to sign back on. Enough is enough. Firefox 3.0 sucks. I really enjoy my nearly instant sign on for my mail so 3.0 is history. Maybe 3.1 will work better.

Rumor was floating that the Google External Keyword tool was actually showing numbers instead of the little green bar. Sure enough!

Just pick your favorite search phrase and get some easy to use data for a change!
you’ll want to check for accuracy against ….well…..whatever you think is accurate.

It looks like things are a bit easier for Keyword research now.

It occurred to me I hadn’t posted my latest research. Michael Fortin had a copywriting tool on his list and it was a doozy… it included rhyming words.

Who cares?

Well, a while back I had this macro software, and I had created a little program that would score words, it could grab words out of a particular page and score each word using my scoring software. When I tabulated the results I discovered that the word “no” had a negative score.  I also notice that the word KNOW also had a very negative score and so my idea was that you should not be using the word “know” in your sales copy either.

Because it sounds the same.   So now I have this copy writing tool that gives me a long list of rhyming words and sure enough, you go to score a list of words that sound like NO and you end up with a bunch of very low scoring words.

So here’s what I discovered:

Actually it’s the SOUND of the word that is having the effect. When a person gets to the call to action, they have a positive action path and a “no” path. If you have used the word “No” a few times in your sales copy, you’ve planted the seeds of self-destruction.

Or “Know”.
Or even “now”.

whoa -6
throw -8
toe -11
tow -11
stow -11
stowe -11
towe -11
mow -14
moe -14
mo -14
tho -15
though -15
pro -20
show -23
doh -34
doe -34
dough -34
noh -37
noe -37

You can see from this rhyming list that even letter sequences aren’t the cause of sales impact. Actually it looks like there is a “Homer Simpson” effect causing sales to drop.

The exception being “flow”, which is one of Clayton’s “water” words.
Thanks to the cool rhyming tool , I’ve been able to test my hypotheses.
Unfortunately, there is no “Yes” equivalent to “Doh!”

Let me correct that….I havn’t found one yet. I need to work with the rhyming tool some more. Maybe rapp’as are on to something.

Finding The Best URL For Your Website. Part 2

Of course I snapped myself up a 3rd Gen iPod as soon as I could.

Image via Wikipedia

Why would I have new knowledge on this? I’m on a Wordpress 100 binge. There is a sale at Domain Sheffif. Sure, Dot Info is not the coolest. But it suits my purposes.

OK…so should we go after that BIG KEYWORD? Are you drooling over it? OK be aware that others are drooling to. There are words farther down the screen that have LESS competition and convert to sales BETTER. What ever your keyword tool is, take note of the traffic farther down the list.

If you go for a BIG keyword on the top, like “IPOD” you may get say 12,000 hits per day. (That number is Just for Fun)

And the competition is 33.8 million competitors.
( Again, just an example)

See, awhile back I was looking through the numbers, and I found this great keyword phrase “signs of diabetes”. competition was very low, and in fact, I was looking around and I found a website that had expired called signs of diabetes.com. But wait a minute. is that phrase profitable? That this tool you can use, my treat:

Detecting Online Commercial Intention

Naturally the first question is how accurate is this thing? I can tell you I have not had a problems with it. I think it’s dead accurate. That particular keyword phrase does not look like it’s very profitable, and the fact that I found the extra URL floating around that had expired suggests that somebody had already tried it out.

But getting back to our ipod…let’s look down a bit and see if we can do some quick numbers.

There is only half the traffic for the Plural form of ipod, but take a look at the competition. It’s one twentieth. Meaning you multiply the one point seven times 20, and you get a number of its just about 33.8. So instead of working 20 times as hard, let’s only work twice as hard. We can build to or three websites, which is more trouble granted, but it’s not 20 times as much work. Plus, we can be number one in three different categories and have our ego stroked. Instead of going after the numb for one prize, and just sure, somebody will be going after us.

So just after this chart we have our next tool…
ipod
(click to dig deeper into this keyword)     per Day     12,215     Competition     33,800,000
ipods
(click to dig deeper into this keyword)         4,918         1,700,000
The Keyword-Rich Domain Suggestion Tool

Plugging in the phrase Apple Ipod ….it turns out that appleipodearphones.com is available. Hey, If not, put a 4 in front of it. Or a “2′ before earphones. You look around with this tool and decided if you see some other good URLs that might make good investments. But whatever you do…

Don’t let your Uncle Earl tell you that they broke the mold after he was born.

There are still ton’s of great URL’s left.

Finding the best URL for your Website. Part 1
May 21, 2008 · Filed Under Main Content

Friday, January 11th, 2008

A friend of mine covered this topic, but I have a lot of research to share on this. First off, James Brausch has a product called Nemeas that evaluates your URL for Ranking Factors and gives it a score based on a compilation of ten of thousands of top ranking URL’s.

Much of what will tend to rank well is not obvious, so the more you experiment, the more you learn. One discovery of mine was that adding “My” at the beginning of any URL gave it a high score. Does Google CARE about the word “My”?

I don’t think so.
My research suggests that URL’s with the word “My” at the beginning TEND to rank higher because they TEND to have a person updating them once in a while.

Google DOES care about updates. Very much. I have made multiple changes to a blog post and found it ranking very high within hours. Most likely because the same keywords were re-posted with each modification I made and “fresh” content ranks higher.

What else ranks well? SHORT URL’s. The shorter your URL the better. In fact 3 letter URLs rank the best for multiple keywords. The reason being, the less “interference” the better. Don’t go looking for those though. There aren’t any left. You can always add on a number though. If your a brit BBC103.COM is available! And it has a nice ring to it.

If your topic is “Sports figures in Canada” then that’s a good URL for you. Just be aware that it doesn’t help you rank for the athlete’s names. If ranking all the names are your goal, then SFG.com will work just fine. Or SFG100.com. Any number from 0 to 200 can be added to a URL and not interfere with ranking, according to the software. Some numbers help.  The easier to remember, the better off you are.  100 works better than 167.  This4You.com is great.  “TractorTires4u” is great if ” TractorTires.com is taken.
Let me go to BlueRazor and check…

TRACTORTIRES4U.COM is available!

See?  There ya go.   Keyword, Ranking, and “branding” all at the same time.
A Trifecta!

“Ease of use” seems to be a factor.  Flowers4u.com is easy to remember and scores well too.

What else ranks well? That main page. The index page for that URL ranks better than any other page. The suggestion here is to keep your sites smaller with more content on each page. For the most part, the URL is only going to help the home page rank well.

All this is assuming that you are planning to use keywords in your URL.

Another advantage to keywords in the URL is that any “URL” link will also include keywords pointing back to your webpage. That’s a proven advantage.

So don’t get trapped in the mindset that “All the good .coms are gone.”

You can find good ones. I KNOW you can!
